Our Different Types of Manuka Honey

What is Manuka Honey

Manuka Honey is a rich, dark but sweet honey made from the pollen of the native New Zealand Manuka bush. The Manuka honey is special as the flowers of the Manuka bush only bloom for a short but contain a lot of nutritional benefits. Studies have shown that Manuka Honey is rich in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that help maintain good well-being. Due to the nutrients contained in Manuka Honey, studies suggest it may help support killing bacteria, inflammation, immunity, improve skin health, infections, and more. Manuka honey is also special as it has a much stronger antibacterial property compared to other raw honey. Hence studies show Manuka honey is effective against bacteria and help healing wounds by acting as a natural antibiotic.

What are the different gradings?

Manuka honey is special as it has a grading system for the different levels of Manuka Honey. UMF and MGO are two different grading systems that differentiate Manuka honey. UMF is the ‘Unique Manuka Factor’ which indicates its’ antibacterial potency. Professor Peter Molan was the first person the use the term UMF. UMF also identifies the concentration of three compounds of leptosperin, DHA, and Methylglyoxal (MGO). The higher the UMF rating, the stronger the honey is when it comes to its antibacterial properties. UMF also indicates the quality and purity of the Manuka honey. The other grading system is MGO. MGO stands for Methylglyoxal and this grading is the potency of Methylglyoxal, which is the primary antibacterial component within the Manuka honey. The higher the MGO rating, the greater concentration of MGO present within the honey.

Which is better? UMF or MGO?

UMF and MGO are both standardised indicators showing the concentrations of the unique compounds found in Manuka honey. It is hard to say which is better as UMF is a pure indicator and MGO is a simpler and more straightforward rating. Also, UMF identifies MGO compounds within the system. Hence, both values and ratings are good to look at.

How to select the right Manuka Honey?

Different ratings of both UMF and MGO have different medicinal properties. Lower ratings from 5 – 10 UMF are honey that is safe for daily ingestion, and natural sweetness that supports a healthy lifestyle. Mid-grade rating from 10 – 15 is a healing grade where it helps maintain a healthy well-being. Higher grades from 15 – 20 are antibacterial grades and are useful for skin therapy as well as other health purposes. Grades of 25+ is for when you are looking for a superior antibacterial with additional nutritional support healing bad wounds. Manuka honey not only heals wounds and skin but also soothes dry and scratchy throats and can be added to warm water, tea, and smoothies for a nourishing drink. The taste of honey can also depend on the strength as the delicious taste usually intensifies with a higher UMF. Depending on your need, you can choose the right Manuka Honey supplement according to your condition.
