“Probiotics” meaning “for life” refers to living beneficial bacteria in supplements and enriched food. Beneficial bacteria, probiotics, naturally live in your body. Most of the good bacteria reside in the intestines which is why they are sometimes called “intestinal flora.” Probiotics support general well-being such as digestion and immunity. Its main job of probiotics is to maintain a healthy balance in your body. When you are sick, bad bacteria enter your body and increase in number. This disturbs your body’s balance. Good bacteria works to fight off the bad bacteria and restore the balance within your body, making you feel better. In the lower intestinal tract, probiotics help us digest food, fight harmful bacteria, and regulate the immune system. When the gut becomes unbalanced with unhealthy levels of certain bacteria, probiotics can help restore the balance.

Good bacteria keeps you healthy by supporting your immune function and controlling inflammation. They also help your body digest food, keep bad bacteria from getting out of control and making. You can increase the amount of good probiotics in your body through foods, drinks, and supplements. You may already have certain foods in your daily diet that contain probiotics. Fermented foods such as yogurt, sourdough bread, cottage cheese, kimchi, and pickles contain lots of good bacteria that benefit your body. There are also fermented drinks like kombucha or kefir that introduce extra probiotics into your diet. Apart from food, you can add probiotics to your diet through dietary supplements.
